WHAT IS IT?
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. Inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points does this.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels called meridians are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others. Needling the acupuncture points can influence the meridians; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the damns, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians.
Recent scientific studies showed that Acupuncture exerts an effect locally and through the central nervous system. By the stimulation of the very fine nerves, which run underneath the skin, it may have some local effects and modify nerve impulses to the spinal cord and brain. This may stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones, which influence the body’s own internal regulating system.
The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF ACUPUNCTURE?
The following are the general scope of use:
Ø Promotion of health and well-being,
Ø Prevention of illness, and
Ø Treatment of various medical conditions.
The list of specific conditions in which Acupuncture can be utilized is endless. It also varies from practitioner to practitioner; from patient to patient; and from condition to condition. It is particularly useful for pain. It can help with joint pains, muscular pains, migraine, and even period pains. It has also been used to treat problems such as sinusitis, hay fever, irritable bowel, and nausea.
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct, comprehensive system of healthcare emphasizing the use of natural therapeutics in health promotion and disease prevention. Naturopathic doctors are licensed to practice as independent doctors who are authorized to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. Naturopathic doctors diagnose by taking thorough histories, performing physical exams, and ordering laboratory testing. Time-tested naturopathic principles and practices are integrated with the latest advances in medical science.
The six guiding principles of naturopathic medicine are:
1. First Do No Harm - Naturopathic doctors utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies first.
2. Identify and Treat the Cause - Naturopathic medicine effectively addresses the underling causes of illness rather than simply suppressing symptoms.
3. The Healing Power of Nature - Naturopathic doctors recognize that each individual possesses an inherent self-healing ability. We strive to support, facilitate, and promote this healing process by removing the obstacles to health.
4. Treat the Whole Person - Naturopathic doctors acknowledge each individual as an integrated whole of spiritual, emotional, physical, mental, and environmental influences and elements.
5. Doctor as Teacher - Naturopathic doctors educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining optimal health.
6. Prevention - Naturopathic medicine is committed to identifying disease risk factors and offering patients appropriate interventions to prevent illness.
Naturopathic Doctors are trained at accredited, four-year, post-graduate medical schools. The comprehensive medical training includes studies in basic medical sciences, physical diagnosis, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging studies, pharmacology, clinical medical sciences, and a variety of natural therapeutics. Naturopathic doctors are required to complete a two-year clinical internship and pass a national basic science and clinical board exams to be licensed.
