Classes and Lectures

The Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine has several classes open to the Orange County community. They include tai chi classes, monthly lectures on integrative medicine and an annual conference on women's wellness.

Tai Chi »

Science-Based Tai Chi/Qigong for Mind-Body Health is an eight-week course for beginners and intermediates.

Tai chi and qigong are traditional Chinese movement exercises that are based on two principles:

  • Energy - Tai chi and qigong can help increase the body’s energy flow and improve health through the use of graceful, repeated movements.
  • Nature - When the yin and yang are in balance, good health is the result. Tai chi and qigong help maintain this balance.

Tai chi and qigong can improve posture, balance, coordination, flexibility and endurance.

In this class, students learn simple yet effective mind/body/breathing techniques. These methods have been shown to measurably enhance the body’s bioenergy level and mind-body functions.

This approach differs from the traditional way of learning tai chi and qigong, which involves memorizing complicated body movements. Integrated mind/body/breathing training is added as students become more advanced.

The course is led by Shin Lin, PhD, a UC Irvine professor and an internationally known expert on tai chi and Qigong. Lin is co-creator of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day and co-chair of the World Congress for Qigong.

Lin has collaborated with Grandmaster Chen Zheng-Lei, the 19th generation heir of Chen Style tai chi from the Chen Family Village in China, in the use of the latest biomedical technologies to study physiological and energetic changes associated with the practice of Tai Chi and Qigong.

Wing Chun Kung Fu »

Science-Based Wing Chun Kung Fu for Self-Defense and Mind-Body Conditioning is a 10-week course designed to develop a high level of mind-body conditioning.

Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art. Its popularity owes much to movies starring Bruce Lee, the most famous of the Wing Chun fighters.

Wing Chun was designed for self defense against opponents of greater size and strength. The style is based on simple, scientifically sound principles and techniques that are highly effective in real life situations, as well as in conditioning the mind and the body.

Wing Chun is an excellent complement to tai chi because it emphasizes self-defense applications while providing training in mental concentration, building quick reflexes and fast muscle function in very limited spaces.

The course is taught by Shin Lin, one of the most experienced Wing Chun instructors in the United States. He began studying traditional Wing Chun as a teenager in Hong Kong. He later went on to study Wing Chun for fighting in real-life situations at the Advanced Wing Chun Academy in Baltimore. He received certification for his ninth-degree gold belt.

In 1988, Lin and Master John Clayton, once the number one point-fighter in the United States, co-founded the Johns Hopkins University Wing Chun Kung Fu Club, which is still active today. The curriculum taught at UC Irvine is based on the model developed at Johns Hopkins.

The Gluten Free Edge: Discover a way to change from the inside out

The secret is out! You don’t have to have celiac disease to benefit from a gluten-free diet. Dieting can be difficult, but nutritionist, Gini Warner will lay out a 7-day meal plan that makes going gluten-free surprisingly simple and chef Ross Harris will teach you how to prepare gourmet meals that help with healthy weight loss.

About Gini Warner: Gini received her Master’s Degree from New York University in Health Education and Nutritional Science. She specializes in gluten intolerance, celiac disease, diabetes, and weight loss.  Gini says, “The key to making successful lifestyle changes is being able to maintain balance. I will help you find that key.” My goal is to help you learn more about the foods that are right for your individual needs. I will teach you how to dine out, to prepare meals for yourself and your family, and to make a mind-body connection. This is what I call “Eating Awareness Training”.
