Research Abstract
Hypertension is the greatest cause of death in middle-aged and elderly North Americans and current Western medical therapies are not fully effective in treating this condition. Acupuncture or electroacupuncture is increasingly accepted as a viable alternative therapy for hypertension in the United States. A distinguishing aspect of acupuncture is its ability to cause prolonged modulation of elevated blood pressure. I have been working on the molecular mechanism of acupuncture, especially the gene expression in the brain area involved in the long-lasting effects of acupuncture on hypertension.
